Brad Johnson, Senior Advisor at Group Services in Bettendorf, provided an update on provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA). As much as someone could fit into a 20 minute program, everyone felt more informed – at least until things change again.

Kevin Koski won the TV raffle! Thanks to everyone for buying a ticket. The club made $400 from the sales and they will go to the Hoedown proceeds.

Rotary Review, Nov. 2

The club got a visit from the “Repo Man,” Wade Argo of Argo Management Group. Luckily everyone was able to drive home in their own car.

The club got a visit from the “other President,” President Zavier Clark of the Rock Island High School Interact Club. President Tom shared the gavel and also inducted a new member, Susan Wilschhusen.

Rotary Review, Oct 26

The Festival of Trees is right around the corner, and Quad City Arts Executive Director Carmen Darland gave the Rock Island Rotary the lowdown on this year’s event.

Bud Phillis presented new Paul Harris Fellow recognition +3 pins to Tricia Barron and John Wetzel. There are plenty more club members to honor and Dr. Phillis looks to bring a lot of pins to future meetings!

Rotary Review, Oct. 19

This week, President Tom Hammar’s daughter, Dietician Molly Shattuck, discussed about wellness and nutrition. Also as a part of the program, Ms. Shattuck brought some healthy foods to sample, including brownies baked with black beans in the recipe!

This is the easiest week ever to become a Paul Harris Fellow or, if you already are a Paul Harris
Fellow, to add another (family member, etc.). Rotarians can double points by making an ONLINE contribution to Polio Plus. If you need additional information, including your account number, contact Bud Phillis at 309-787-0955, and he will provide it. This is a critical time in the fight against polio, and we are making an extra push to secure the $200 million needed to match the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation challenge grant. We’re up to the challenge at Rock Island Rotary!

Rotary Review, Oct. 12

This week Rotarians enjoyed a visit from the Culinary Kids from the Annie Wittenmeyer Center. Not only do they get to be around delicious gourmet food, they are also learning life skills necessary for them to succeed.

President Tom announced that a Centennial Committee is being formed to plan for the Rock Island Rotary 100 Birthday – see him if you would like to help plan!

The Rock Island Rotary Hoedown is fast approaching! Make sure you turn in your ticket money to Kathy Trone! And bring your wine and whiskey for the fundraiser! This week the club heard about our Youth Exchange student Diego Garcia’s home country, Venezuela. It sounds like a beautiful place and must have the world’s most friendliest people!

The club got a visit from District 6420 Governor Don Ahrensen at Tuesday’s meeting. DG Ahrensen talked about the future visioning process and how each club can benefit from the process. “The Chalkboard” is in full swing as school has started. Birthday Books at Earl Hanson is coming up and the school is also having a Meet & Greet for Rotarians on August 26 at 2:45 p.m.
